I thought I would share the picture of our in the garage guest, one we would never dare invite in our home. My sweet sis had a bad experience with one of these cool female insect species. Which is really interesting when you think how much El loves insects.
I still haven't made real peace with spiders and creepy crawlies, though with a little boy I need to start getting used to it. Just the other day we were at the chiropractor's and J-man and I watched as a black widow just like this descended down (from the safe OUTER side of the window) using her own thread. He was really captured by it. And then someone came from outside and just hit the spider down. All of the sudden I realized that for my little boy this wasn't a 'scary creepy crawly' but something that was moving and now was paralyzed. I think he was pretty affected for a while, until his attention was diverted by our visit with the chiro. I haven't thought about it too much. But for the first time I felt bad for a big black (creepy) spider. Why are spiders creepy? And if she is creepy, what am I? I wish I knew what J-man was thinking. I don't even know when I caught arachnophobia. I do know though that I wish i could believe in spiders like Charlotte, but my sister in law's experience just reinforced in me the desire to take off the sheets at night and inspect them for good before I retire for the day!

That picture is stunning...what kind of camera do you have?
Jonathan and I have been in his application process for predoctoral internship. It is the final year of any clinical psychology doctoral program, and you must complete the full-year, full-time job prior to receiving your degree. So we are a week away from finding out where we're going; this Friday we find out if he has matched (it's all computer based). We will move at some point over the summer, but who knows when. It really depends on where we're going and when he starts. We did this a couple years ago when I applied, but I matched at a site here in the area so we didn't have to move. That's the scoop! It's been something I blogged about in the fall, but not much since then. Thanks for asking, and your prayers are appreciated. Say hi to Jon for me.
That's really a thought-provoking thing, seeing the spider through the eyes of your son, who doesn't have the phobia/dislike that you do.
I am like your mom, I guess. If a spider is not hurting anything and is tiny, I leave it alone, even in the house.
If it's large enough that I'm not comfortable with it in the house, I have gotten very good at trapping spiders and taking them outside to freedom.
Drazen thinks it's over the top.
But I see them as God's creatures that do more good than harm and just wound up in the wrong place.
Mosquitoes and flies, on the other hand, I consider to be results of the Fall, so I have no qualms about killing them and stopping them from infecting people.
And I would kill a brown recluse if it were in the house.
Charlotte did not hurt people. :-)
Loved your post and sheila's comment. Your nonna called me "assassina" for the verve I had killing flies during our holiday in the hills surrounded by cows. I do see a difference between types of insects, I fear. Whether all this depends on the fall or not...boh! I just don't know. I have tried...strangely even with flies who are near my window and seem to be fighting to get out...to try to scoot all types of insects and beasties to the great (okay, not so great sometimes) outdoors!
My rationale for the Fall is that even St. Francis didn't love flies. So I figure he must have known something important about the matter, and can't think what else it would have been!
I kill spiders with hairspray. Your son would hate me. LOL.
